Who were the good, the bad and the ugly in the American West expansion period of its history?

A lot of conflict arose when the settlers arrived. Invaders came from all corners of the globe. Some names have become synonymous with the American West but history has a habit of providing many distortions of the truth. Was Custer/Billy the Kid/Butch Cidy for example heroes or villains ? And what of the indigenous tribes like the Sioux, the Pawnee and the Cheyenne? Were the bad or not?
