Eye itches and burns?

My right eye itches quite a bit, which causes me to scratch it. When I do, it begins to burn (it seems as if my eye becomes dry?...), but its unbearably itchy when I try to stop and still burns. It's been coming and going for about two weeks now (it acted like this for a few days, and I thought it disappeared, but now it's back with a vengeance). It's most likely not allergies because even when pollen levels rise and fall, the occurrence doesn't change. It feels like it's coming from the bottom and top eyelid most of the time, but sometime from the eye itself. What is this? Please help!
